Jense, Maher.

The good: Kudos on giving back the modified LGPL code. It seems that is all that was wanted of you and required of you by the license.

The bad: That it had to happen after a public spat is unfortunate. Makes everyone look like mad dogs that can't agree on simple licenses?.

The not so pretty either: that late post about David, goliath and all that googeblidddeboggk. Dude, give it a rest! All you really needed to say was "my bad, the todo sheet was under an old pizza that I found yesterday and it took us 15 mo to do it. It smells of dirty socks but hey it is done. Peace, we are clean now, thank you, good night". Click! you turn off the light and leave without making TOOO much noise. Instead the post is delusional... again.

Look between us girls here. I know how percieved competition can heighten anxiety. I have had my share of fun nights. My recommendation is for you guys to stop blogging tho, Maher, you are not coherent and as Gavin points out you are clowning yourself at this point. Drop it.

And I know where it comes from. I also understand how nerve wrecking deals can be, whether they work or they don't. My advice? Send Maher on a extended break. At least 3 weeks, he is talking garbage right now. See my mantra at JBoss when crisis hit was "it is urgent that we do NOTHING!". I would pause for effect and love the look on people's face. It was such a french thing for me to do. And, seriously, I would then leave for 3 weeks of vacation :) it worked wonders for me. It drove my US executives absolutely NUTS! But it prevented the "knee jerk" reaction, or "haste makes waste". Take a step back and this issue will seem petty in 3 weeks.

For the bigger problem of competition, Maher you need to chill, you guys will be more than all right. You have a good product, a great brand, a solid business and a community. So RELAX... it's all good. RHT is going to put all wood behind one arrow (Gavin and SEAM tooling) and since you have a good track record of listening to what the common customers want, I am sure you will find ways to sell into the bigger market, unified market, RHT is about to create around JEMS and SEAM.

You will be fine, for now, chill...

$6.66B for BEA: Larry goes Shopping

Oracle has made a $17 per share offer to buy BEA. This putting a somewhat theatrical "number of the beast" valuation on BEA. Yesterday the stock was sitting at $13 and this morning it is at 18 and change representing a 30% jump. Obviously the crazy dude over at BEA is going to put up at least a simulacrum of a fight. Thug vs Thug: Porsche 1, Hedge Funds: 0

The latest drama is fun. VW became the largest company in the world, in terms of market cap, ahead of EXXON on a little financial market coup d'etat orchestrated by Porsche. Apparently VW stocks was on the way down, I don't know the details but many Hedge Funds (HF) were short the position. Fine. The price goes down. Porsche starts buying the anonymous float (and probably some private too?), but the point is they build a 73% market share without many people noticing. In the US you would need disclosure after 10% or so. Point is, that many HF wake up and realize that their short position is about to lose a lot of money. So what do they do? those idiots? they short cover all together, which means they buy the stock to cover the short. The stock zooms up, by a full multiplier and overtakes EXXON. Quickies #3, protecting IP in OSS

Now enjoying my status as a sage of the industry, which is to say I am older than 20, but alas, not a billionaire, God fuck-it; people are all the time asking me for nuggets of wisdom from my vast experience at the top. Quickies from marcf #3: What IP is there to protect in OSS? B.D asks: "marcf, my open source project is starting to enjoy a measure of success, I am thinking of going professional with it, I am thinking about business models. How much thought should I put in protecting my Intellectual Property?" Answer: B.D. protecting IP in OSS is extremelly important. The only "private" property that exists in OSS are 1- brand 2- URL. Both are obviously related but really you need to protect your brand name, in other words REGISTER your trademarks, use them, declare they are yours and enforce the trademark, meaning protect against infringement.
